WHEN ARE YOU AVAILABLE FOR SESSIONS?

HOW YOUNG OF A CHILD CAN YOU WORK WITH?

I feel if the child is able to play then I will be able to help them with whatever they are working through.  I have effectively worked with children as young as 4 but even younger children can benefit from play therapy.

WHAT COUNSELING THEORY DO YOU USE?

I use child-centered play therapy, Synergetic Play Therapy (SPT), dyadic developmental psychotherapy (DDP), client-centered therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy.
My foundation is the concept that a child's/teen's inappropriate behavior is not due to something "wrong with them".  Simply, it is their brain's adaption/response to a stressful or traumatic event(s).  The behavior is their way of maintaining self-preservation and protecting themselves the best way they can.  This behavior is rooted in fear, the child is acting out because they are afraid.

HOW CAN I PAY

We accept cash, check, credit or debit cards, as well as MSA and HSA account payments.

HOW DOES PLAY THERAPY WORK

Play therapy allows the child to share their experiences with the therapist through play.  The child "sets up" the therapist to feel what they are feeling.  The child can transfer feelings of joy, excitement, fear, loneliness, sadness, confusion, etc. onto the therapist who then models ways to acknowledge and name these feelings.  The therapist then models ways to more effectively handle these difficult feelings, emotions, and experiences verbally and through the use of play.  Among other things, the child learns to increase their emotional tolerance window, increase their emotional vocabulary, name their feelings, become more intune with what is physically going on inside their body, and learn emotional coping skills.  The best part is, all of this is done through play.

SHOULD I BRING MY CHILD TO THE INTAKE SESSION

I am eager to meet your son or daughter but it is best if they do not come to the intake session.  We will be going over paperwork and policies first.  Then I will complete a comprehensive assessment of your child with you so I can learn as much about what is going on as possible before I meet them.

DO I NEED TO DO ANYTHING EXTRA IF I AM DIVORCED OR SEPARATED

Texas law requires written consent from both parents if the child is under 18, except in special circumstances, or if 1 parent/guardian has full medical decision making.  I will need a paper copy of any and all court documents pertaining to the child.
